Psalm 29

A psalm of David.

¹Ascribe to the Lord,^(A) you heavenly beings,^(B)
ascribe to the Lord glory^(C) and strength.
²Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord in the splendor of his^[a] holiness.^(D)

³The voice^(E) of the Lord is over the waters;
    the God of glory^(F) thunders,^(G)
    the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.^(H)
⁴The voice of the Lord is powerful;^(I)
    the voice of the Lord is majestic.
⁵The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
    the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.^(J)
⁶He makes Lebanon leap^(K) like a calf,
    Sirion^[b]^(L) like a young wild ox.^(M)
⁷The voice of the Lord strikes
    with flashes of lightning.^(N)
⁸The voice of the Lord shakes the desert;
    the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh.^(O)
⁹The voice of the Lord twists the oaks^[c]^(P)
    and strips the forests bare.
And in his temple all cry, “Glory!”^(Q)

¹⁰The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;^(R)
the Lord is enthroned as King forever.^(S)
¹¹The Lord gives strength to his people;^(T)
the Lord blesses his people with peace.^(U)

A Time for Everything

3 There is a time^(A) for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:

²    a time to be born and a time to die,
    a time to plant and a time to uproot,^(B)
³    a time to kill^(C) and a time to heal,
    a time to tear down and a time to build,
⁴    a time to weep and a time to laugh,
    a time to mourn and a time to dance,
⁵    a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
    a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
⁶    a time to search and a time to give up,
    a time to keep and a time to throw away,
⁷    a time to tear and a time to mend,
    a time to be silent^(D) and a time to speak,
⁸    a time to love and a time to hate,
    a time for war and a time for peace.

⁹What do workers gain from their toil?^(E) ¹⁰I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race.^(F) ¹¹He has made everything beautiful in its time.^(G) He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet^[a] no one can fathom^(H) what God has done from beginning to end.^(I) ¹²I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. ¹³That each of them may eat and drink,^(J) and find satisfaction^(K) in all their toil—this is the gift of God.^(L) ¹⁴I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him.^(M)

¹⁵Whatever is has already been,^(N)
and what will be has been before;^(O)
and God will call the past to account.^[b]

¹¹For who knows a person’s thoughts^(A) except their own spirit^(B) within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. ¹²What we have received is not the spirit^(C) of the world,^(D) but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. ¹³This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom^(E) but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.^[a] ¹⁴The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God^(F) but considers them foolishness,^(G) and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. ¹⁵The person with the Spirit^(H) makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, ¹⁶for,
